Have you noticed the increasing trend of engagement parties amongst your friends? For some of us who are unaware of the appropriate engagement party may wonder ”What do I wear?” Although some engagement party invitations will specifically state the dress code, others may simply state the date, and location of the party. The following steps will lead you to a stress free outfit choice:

1. Take a look at the invitation:

-Where is the party taking place? Someone’s residence, or a five star restaurant? Seems obvious but someone’s residence is probably going to be a bit more casual than the five star restaurant.

-When is the party taking place? Season, and time of day. If the party is being held during the Summer day, you may be tempted to wear white. DO NOT wear white to the engagement party. You do not want to outshine the bride-to-be in any way. Even if the party is being held during the day, do not wear shorts – opt for a knee length dress or skirt. Make sure you have the appropriate cover up just in case you are under dressed.

2.Ask your friends who were also invited what they are wearing. This is the ’strength by numbers’ strategy. The more people you communicate with, the more in sync you will be with the rest of the guests.

Look at the big picture. You want to look your best- this is the beginning of the couple’s memorbable ”wedding” chapter of life. Dress according to venue, type of event ( BBQ, 5 course meal), time of day, and season.

*Keep in mind* – Engagement parties are never as formal as the wedding. So, if you have 2 outfits in mind, wear the less formal outfit to the engagement and save the formal outfit for the big day.

Some appropriate outfit options for an engagement party:

Women:

Winter- Try to wear something that is either a long dress, or skirt. If you have to wear something shorter than knee length, make sure you wear appropriate closed toe shoes, or boots. Try not to over do the outerwear. Remember, you don’t want to steal all the attention.

Spring- Think Sunday best. Or what you would wear for a family brunch. Something with light, larger patterns, or pastel colors. Again, nothing too short.

Summer-Summer is a great time to find your engagement party outfit because there are so many fun sundresses available. Remember to take a cover-up. If you do wear something without straps, or thin straps, I’d recommend you wearing your cover up into the event. Better safe than sorry. Try to avoid showing too much skin… unless of course it’s a pool party.

Fall- Autumn colors tend to be less festive and happy but try to be fitting with your season. Layering in the fall is a great way to make your outfit more exciting. Even if they are having an ”outside” party, try to dress appropriately for the weather.

Men:

Sorry, no season guide here but the guidelines are simple.

Try to find something that has a collar. Whether it be long sleeve, short sleeve, polo, or button down is depending on the actual party. Jeans are usually accepted as long as they are on the dark wash side. Flip flops are usually frowned upon unless it’s a pool party or on the beach.

WHAT HAPPENS IN LAS VEGAS …. STAYS IN LAS VEGAS. Here’s your guide on the best places to visit for going out, gambling and having the ultimate Sin City Experience. Las Vegas has changed since the days of gambling halls, and showgirls. There is so much to do in this wonderful city many people call home.

MOST LUXURIOUS HOTELS:

- WYNN HOTEL : Your experience at this luxury resort can be described in one word: Opulence. Talk about luxury. When you enter your room, you will find yourself facing a wall to ceiling window with amazing views. ( Try and request the Strip view) Decked out with plasma TVs, your own business center ( including fax and internet connection), this room is amazing. Now, most of the time when you are in Vegas you don’t want to be cooped up in your room – not here. Slip into the most comfortable bed in the world. Talk about beauty sleep. If you want to luxury at your fingertips, stay here.

-THE VENETIAN: The rooms at the Venetian are great for larger parties, for those who want some space. Not only do you get your sleeping area, there is also a section for relaxing and / or getting some work done (yes, there is a business center here too). The Venetian also has some great shopping so you can get that perfect outfit in the comfort of your own hotel.

-BELLAGIO: The water show hotel! Need we say more? This hotel is extravagant, and definitely for the high rollers. The rooms are grandiose and very sophisticated. The rooms are very spacious with extra seating available. This hotel has been featured in various movies… can you guess which ones?

- CAESARS PALACE – THE AUGUSTUS TOWER: Las Vegas big shot renovates the Augustus tower. The rooms in this tower are amazing. Large plasma screen TVs, great decor, very spacious seating area, and amazing bathrooms. Don’t forget the amazing views, and the shopping.

HOW TO GET THE MOST OF YOUR HOTEL STAY:

- Upon checking in ask if there is any way you can get an upgrade. Some times the hotel will be able to sneak in a free upgrade … if you ask nicely )

-If you want to get an upgrade try this : tell the attendant at check in that you are in Las Vegas celebrating a special event. Proposal, Anniversary, Wedding, they may be able to give you some added perks.

OTHER WAYS TO ENJOY LAS VEGAS (other than gambling and going out):

-RED ROCK: You may be in the middle of the desert but there is a lot of nature to be found! Just 15 min away from the strip, you can find the 10+ hiking trails of Red Rock Canyon. You can enjoy your whole day walking along the trails, possibly even seeing little animals.

- SHOPPING: There is some amazing shopping in Sin City. You may be able to find one of the malls in your hotel, but the best is Fashion Show Mall. Conveniently located on the strip, you will never be away from a brand new outfit!

*Check out your hotel… there is a lot of things to see right on the strip*

BEST NIGHTCLUBS

-LAX: Located at the Luxor, the people who brought you PURE have done it again with LAX. With amazing celebrity appearances weekly, LAX is a great place to go dancing. The resident DJs play good music. The club is 2 levels… with the dance floor on the middle of the first floor. Lots of tables, and booths available for bottle service. BEST NIGHTS: Wednesday, Friday, Saturday

-TAO: Located at the Venetian, this spot is still hot. With multiple levels, and rooms, this place has something for everyone. During the summer, guests have access to Tao Beach as well. With multiple dance floors, this place is larger than other places in Vegas. As great as it is .. beware- this place can get very crowded. BEST NIGHTS: Thursday, Friday, Saturday

-BODY ENGLISH: Located in the Hard Rock Hotel ( off the strip) this place is insane. It usually gets packed by midnight so you have to get in as early as possible. The music is great, and the drinks are always flowing. The great thing about this club is that there is a second level of tables overlooking the dance floor. This way, those of you who pay the extra for bottle service have your own special area while looking over the club. BEST NIGHTS: Friday, Saturday, Sunday

-PURE: Located in Caesars Palace, this place is VEGAS. As seen in every major magazine, this place is where the Pussycat Dolls perform, it’s where all the celebrities have their birthday parties. It’s a must see VEGAS club. BEST NIGHTS: Friday, Saturday

- MOON/ PLAYBOY CLUB: Located in the Palms Casino this place gets you a 2 for 1 deal. One of the newest clubs in Las Vegas, Moon and Playboy Club get you to the top of the new Palms tower, over looking all of Las Vegas. Moon has an amazing sound system, outdoor areas and escalators taking you to the one of a kind Playboy Club. The Playboy Club features a bar, dance floor, and gambling. Every man’s dream come true. But beware- the gambling tables at the Playboy Club seem to have high limits so make sure you know what you are getting into. BEST NIGHTS: Tuesday, Friday, Saturday

As always, this is just a sampling of what Las Vegas has to offer. A great way to get the best of Las Vegas is to talk to your concierge at your hotel. If you want to get the most bang for your gambling buck you might want to get a player’s card so you can earn some points and goodies!

Viva Las Vegas!

Quarter Life Crisis

Taking a good look around …
I’m not alone.
Going back to what I said in a previous entry-
Life while in school seemed so structured
And all I wanted was a little bit of freedom.
Today, I am free as a bird and I all I want is a little bit of structure.
I guess the ”Grass IS greener on the other side” after all.
When I was younger I would hear people around me say “Be glad you are still in school – the real world isn’t as great as it may seem.” Maybe they were right…..
After experiencing some of the real world struggles as a college graduate… going back to school doesn’t seem so bad.
However, after being free for a while, can I go back to the mundane lifestyle of a highly structurized schedule?
What do you do when you find yourself questioning your path?
My dear friend… let’s call her Wahine seems to be on the other side of the fence.
A very intelligent, beautiful young woman, Wahine is currently enrolled in a highly competitive program. However, after years of school she’s starting to question her path.
“Is this what I really want to do with my life?”
Will obtaining an advanced degree provide me the necessary tools to succeed?
Or is all this time, studying, energy just because the structured life can lead me to a stable life?
What if the stable life isn’t a happy life?
The questions go on and on….
Whether it be my situation or Wahine’s situation I can only say one thing …..
Access your predicament from all angles…
Don’t be blindsighted by the glitz, glamour, money, fame, luxury, fantasy, or the DREAM…
And
In the end …
Be confident in your decision.
There is no room to look back and regret – for you control your life.
It’s up to you to make it happen.
(Yes, so much easier said than done … but hey- it’s a start)

A little behind schedule but HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Every year people make New Year Resolutions that they vow to keep… I know I do.
And yet, by the end of January I find myself slipping back in to my old ways.
This year is going to be different ….
Now, some of us may say this every year….
But this year, I will do as I say.
And you this blog will monitor my progress, keep me in line, and also help me reach my goals and dreams that I have set for myself.

This is going to be the year that it happens…
What is ”it”?
You’ll have to stick around to find out….

Quote: " I am only one, but still I am one…"

When you find yourself thinking that you don’t matter, or that you are just one person- remember this:

“I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.
Helen Keller

Some days may seem harder than others, but don’t let that stop you from trying your best.

A little background….

Before I dive into my new world of blogging, here’s a little more about me.

A 24 year old female who thought she had life figured out.
Growing up in a home where education and success meant happiness… I grew up thinking that once I obtained my college degree my life would fall into place.
And yet, here I am 2 years out of college and still wondering why I can’t solve this puzzle.
It’s like as soon as I get most of the puzzle completed… I throw it all back in the box and start a new puzzle.
Entering college I wanted to become a pediatrician. With a passion for helping others and my love for children, I felt that being a pediatrician would be a nice marriage of both worlds.
A few science classes into my college career, I realized…. medicine is not be for me.
But I couldn’t shake my passion for learning about people…
So, I changed my major to psychology.
I am still fascinated by the human mind, emotions, personalities, and soul… and am so glad I pursued a psychology degree (despite being the “easy” degree).

During my college years I worked in retail….

My shopping became more of an addiction…
My love and thirst for fashion and style became my passion…
I was given the rare opportunity to start my own online clothing company while in college.
Boy, am I blessed to have had this opportunity.
2 years into the industry of fashion, entrepreneurship and bills….
I find myself searching for those final pieces to this puzzle.
And yet, it seems that this puzzle is missing a few pieces…

This is where I am today.
A few pieces short of completing my masterpiece.
Now, do I look for those pieces and try to make it work?
Or are those pieces lost in the black hole of impossible?
Do I open up a new puzzle and start from scratch?

This is the year …. as I reach 25 …
This is the time I need to take control of my life and figure out…
Who I am
What I stand for
What my puzzle is going to look like at the end.
